The One with the Most Cushions Wins

Making a Statement in the Bedroom…

There are two types of people in this world… People who make the bed, and people who don’t. Let’s ignore the people who don’t make their bed, because they really don’t count as humans anyway, and concentrate on us smart ones…

Recently one of my clients contacted me as she was confused about how to change the style of her bedroom from season to season without redecorating. When it comes to bedrooms, the easiest changes to make are with the layering, textures and colours of your quilt covers, bed sheets and cushions. An inexpensive way to change the look and style, nothing says luxury like an excessive number of pillows and cushions. Remember, she who dies with the most cushions wins!!

Today I’m going to show you how a few simple cushions can brighten up your bedroom and make your bed look like a high-end magazine display.

Note: Although all examples are for a Queen bed, they can be easily modified for any size!

Step One: Plan the Look and Style of Your Bed in Comparison to Your Room!

Before you purchase cushions and go all out, first you must decide the colour scheme, theme and style of your room, If you haven’t already. This can be as simple or as extravagant as you want but remember to pick colours that complement each other in that style. Keep the colour palette simple – 2 to 3 colours and tones. Try and compliment your surroundings eg. wall colour, bedhead, carpet or artwork.

Step Two: The Fitted Sheet…

As normal, make your bed starting with the fitted sheet! Be sure the colour of your fitted sheet matches your other sheet and the colour scheme of your bed. Now for this you can go with a simple white, which is always safe, or you can venture out and try a colour that fits in with your chosen style.

Step Three: The Top Sheet…

Now for the presentation – there are many ways you can do this. You can choose to tuck all corners of the sheets under the mattress or leave them flowing over the sides. You can choose to either bring the top of the sheet right up to the head of the bed or you can fold the top of the sheet over and fold it over the quilt cover at the top.

For my examples I have chosen to tuck the sheet under the mattress and fold the top of the sheet.

Step Four: The Quilt Cover…

The quilt cover is the most important part of the look and style of the bed and it is what will determine what the colours and textures will be of the decorative cushions. I personally like to have a quilt cover that is one size bigger than my actual bed, for example having a king size quilt and quilt cover for a queen size bed, this is important to remember when buying a new mattress. Most new mattresses today have a pillow top and they are higher than your standard mattresses, thus, it is important to go up a size in quilts and quilt covers. This also allows more quilt cover to flow over the edges of your bed and giving you enough fabric if you want to tuck the quilt cover under the mattress for a stylistic effect.

For my examples I have chosen to leave the quilt cover hanging free off the mattress and I have brought the quilt cover down to cover more of the end of the bed instead of the top. I prefer this effect when I use linen fabric as it ties in with the easy flow of the material and style.

Step Five: The Pillows & Cushions…

Now here is where the real creativity starts to spark. There are multiple different ways you can arrange your pillows and cushions depending on your style, bed size and the number of pillows and cushions you have. Here is a step by step example of how I personally love to arrange my bed.

  • Step 1: 2 European Pillows

Place two european pillows up against the head of your bed, sitting directly in the middle of the mattress. If you have a King bed then you may choose to have three pillows and two king size standard pillows. As an alternative you may place standard pillows first and place the european pillows second.

  • Step 2: 2 Standard Pillows

Place your standard sleeping pillows in front of these making sure they too are placed in the middle of the mattress. As an alternative you may place standard pillows first and place the european pillows second. As an alternative you may place standard pillows first and place the european pillows second.

  • Step 3: 2 Pillows – Matching Your Quilt Cover

Place two these two pillows in front of your sleeping pillows. These pillows should match your quilt cover with the corresponding pillowcases.

  • Step 4: 1 Accent Cushion/s

Add an accent cushion in front of these pillows, directly in the middle of the mattress.

  • Step 5: Throw

And last of all, add a throw at the end of your bed to finish the look! The throw can be either casually thrown on the bed or folded neatly at the end.

And Here are the Finished Looks!

I hope you all enjoyed!

Remember folks, beautify the world one room at a time!
